What Actually Makes a Great Realtor? (Hint: It’s Not Just Sales)
Written by Gillian Gooch • June 11, 2026
When most people think about real estate, they often picture contracts, negotiations, showings, signs in the yard, and closing tables.
And while those things are certainly part of the job, they’re only a small piece of what truly makes a great Realtor®.
The reality is that buying or selling a home is one of the biggest financial and emotional decisions many people will ever make. Because of that, the right real estate agent should offer far more than simply unlocking doors or putting a listing on the market.
A great Realtor® becomes a guide, an advocate, a communicator, a problem solver, and sometimes even a source of reassurance during stressful moments.
Over the years, I’ve learned that what clients remember most usually isn’t the paperwork.
It’s how they were treated throughout the process.
Did they feel informed?
Did they feel heard?
Did they feel supported when unexpected situations came up?
Did they feel like someone was truly looking out for their best interests?
Those things matter.
Real estate transactions rarely go perfectly from start to finish. There are deadlines, negotiations, inspections, financing hurdles, moving logistics, emotional decisions, and moments where things can feel overwhelming very quickly. During those moments, communication and organization become incredibly important.
One of the strengths I bring into real estate comes from my background in education and leadership. Before transitioning into this career, I spent years managing classrooms, leading teams, overseeing departments, and communicating with families in high-pressure environments where organization and clear communication were essential every single day.
Those skills naturally carried over into real estate.
Because at the heart of this business, people simply want to know someone is paying attention to the details and helping guide them through the process with honesty and professionalism.
A great Realtor® should help clients feel more confident — not more confused.
That means being proactive instead of reactive.
Explaining things clearly instead of using confusing industry language.
Keeping clients informed instead of leaving them wondering what happens next.
And advocating for clients while still treating everyone involved in the transaction with professionalism and respect.
I also believe integrity matters deeply in this business.
In today’s world, it can sometimes feel like everything is focused on numbers, transactions, and sales volume. But for me, relationships have always mattered more than chasing numbers.
I want clients to feel comfortable asking questions.
I want them to feel supported throughout the process.
And I want them to know they’re working with someone who genuinely cares about helping them make informed decisions for their future.
That’s especially important for first-time homebuyers, families relocating, older clients navigating downsizing, or anyone going through a major life transition.
Buying or selling a home can feel intimidating enough on its own. The right guidance can make all the difference.
At the end of the day, a great Realtor® is not simply someone who can help a client get to the closing table.
It’s someone who helps clients feel prepared, informed, respected, and supported from beginning to end.
Because real estate is about more than property.
It’s about people.
And that part should never be overlooked.
In faith and service,
Gillian Gooch, Broker/Realtor®
