The Seasons of Homeownership: When the Right Home Changes with Life
Written by Gillian Gooch • July 16, 2026
There is often a lot of pressure surrounding major life decisions.
We feel pressure to make the right choice, plan for the future, and somehow anticipate exactly what life will look like years from now. That pressure can be especially strong when it comes to buying a home.
Many people begin their home search hoping to find the perfect house—the one that will meet every need today and every need they may have years down the road.
But life rarely unfolds exactly as we expect.
Families grow. Careers change. Children are born. Opportunities arise. Parents age. Priorities shift. New chapters begin.
And sometimes, the home that was exactly right for one season of life is no longer the right fit for the next.
That doesn't mean it was the wrong home.
In fact, it may have been exactly what was needed at the time.
One of the things I've learned through working with buyers and sellers is that every home serves a purpose.
Some homes provide a starting point. They represent independence, hard work, and the excitement of building something of your own for the first time.
Other homes become the backdrop for raising a family. They witness school projects spread across the kitchen table, birthday celebrations in the backyard, and countless ordinary moments that eventually become treasured memories.
Still others provide comfort and simplicity during a season when life begins to slow down and priorities begin to change.
The common thread is that each home supports a particular chapter of life.
Sometimes people feel guilty when they begin thinking about moving. They wonder if they should stay longer or question whether leaving means they didn't make the right decision years ago.
I don't believe that's true at all.
Life is made up of seasons, and every season brings different needs, challenges, and opportunities. Just because one chapter comes to an end doesn't mean it wasn't meaningful.
In many ways, that's exactly what makes a home special.
A home doesn't have to last forever to have tremendous value.
A home can be the place where you built your career.
The place where you brought home your children.
The place where you celebrated holidays, hosted family gatherings, and created memories that will stay with you long after you've moved on.
Its purpose was never defined by how long you stayed.
Its purpose was defined by the life you lived while you were there.
As a Realtor®, I often have the privilege of helping people navigate these transitions. Some are exciting. Some are emotional. Most are a combination of both.
What I remind clients is that moving forward doesn't erase the significance of the chapter you're leaving behind.
The memories remain.
The lessons remain.
The relationships remain.
And the home will always be part of your story.
The beautiful thing about homeownership is that it grows and changes alongside us. Different homes support different seasons, and each one contributes something valuable to the journey.
Sometimes the right decision isn't finding a home that works forever.
Sometimes it's recognizing that a new season has arrived and embracing the opportunities that come with it.
